Story of Mara

Writer's picture: Adil MaliaAdil Malia

This lovely story from mythology to share.. The night before his Enlightenment, Demon God Mara attacked Gautama with all might..doubt, greed, anger, frustration to block him from enlightenment. But he failed & left in disarray. But Mara not disuaded, through out his life, kept attacking Buddha. All that Buddha would but do is say, 'Evil One', I have seen your new disguise. And instead of anger, offer Mara tea. In frustration, Mara would leave. Each one of us in our workday gets attacked by Mara in Corporate disguise. Several times. Toxic bosses, jealous colleagues, gossips, frustrating preassures, competitive preassures. Not being Buddha, we succumb by responding the way Mara wants. Mara wins, we lose. Thus it stays in our hearts & minds. And at times makes us behave like him in embodiment of his evil agenda. Turkish poet Rumi says it beautifully.. This being human is a guest house. Every morning, a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, Some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor. The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in. Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide for you from beyond. Identify Mara in Corporate Disguise in your workday. And offer tea.
