Never Forget the Wind Beneath Your Wings

Many will gather around you at the winning post, but only a few will run beside you on the arduous road that leads there.

Everyone wants to share the celebration; only a few are willing to share the struggle.The real contributors are those who stood beside you when the destination was distant, the road uncertain and success merely a hope. They encouraged you when your confidence faltered, steadied you when you stumbled and helped carry the burden when it became too heavy.

Victory attracts a crowd; struggle reveals your true companions. Therefore, when the applause begins and the rewards are distributed, remember the hands that carried the weight—not merely those that rose to clap. In your moment of triumph, personally acknowledge those who quietly contributed to your success. Without their support, victory might have been far more difficult—perhaps even impossible.

Cheerleaders and well-wishers undoubtedly add energy and colour to the celebration. You might still have crossed the finishing line without their thunderous applause—but perhaps not without those who supported you through the exhausting miles that preceded it.

History offers us a powerful example.

Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay when they reached the summit of Mount Everest in 1953, the world celebrated their extraordinary achievement. Yet that historic ascent was made possible by the courage, preparation and labour of an entire expedition—climbers, Sherpas and support staff—many of whom never stood upon the summit themselves.

They did not appear in the final photograph, but they helped make that photograph possible.

Success may belong to the winner, but its story also belongs to everyone who helped make the winning possible.

So, when you deliver your victory speech, remember to thank not only those applauding before you, but also those who walked—often silently—beside you.
