Why do some people presumed at a point of time to be capable for higher promotion, upon being actually promoted, subsequently fail whilst some others in similar situations when promoted, succeed ???
If you are searching for an answer to this dilemma in domains of education, experience or other cognitive domains, the answer will elude you. The real answer lies embedded in the mindset of the promoted person. How does he curate his thinking and mindset to prepare his thinking for that higher position that he is elevated to.
The elevated cat must first not imitate the tiger. Imitations have a short life. It has to develop its own unique leadership style. The mew of the cat however fierce can never even by best imitation, sould like the roar of the tiger. Infact it may sound ridiculous. So understand the role of a leader and what it is expected to deliver but please that does not include aping the Tiger, the previous leader.
Most importantly, the cat must stop eating rats. Leaders upon their promotion keep doing things they are familiar with whilst they were in the previous role. They dwell on their old 'Comfort Zone' even in the new job. The new leader has to understand the new role and it's expectations and learn to do the new job.
This is where the failing variety of promoted leaders fall and are not able to rise to the asks of the new role. The cat tries to imitate the tiger role, tries to walk with the agility & confidence of the tiger , also expects respect from the others as if it was a tiger but then continues to eat rats.
Transformation in leadership is much beyond imitated style. Don't continue to do the old job or keep doing what you did in your old role. New role has new expectations. Go under the skin of the new role. Understand what the new role demands. Pull out the best version of you to deliver to the new job and may you succeed.
But please , please, please, do not imitate merely the cosmetic style of your predecessor . It may not suit you. Your style will suit you better. And above all, if you are a cat with a tiger as your predecessor, immediately stop eating rats !
