The Unopened Gift: Discovering and Nurturing One’s Talent

Each one of us is born with a talent—often a unique one. It is a gift bestowed by divinity, distinct and deeply personal. However, this talent does not always align with the profession we pursue in our everyday, practical lives.

Merely because one lives in a city and works in, say, a financial institution for survival, it does not follow that one’s true talent lies in that domain. Our livelihood and our innate gifts are not always the same—and confusing the two can lead to a life only partially fulfilled.

From experiences in the talent space, a few recurring patterns emerge:

a. The Unexplored Gift

Many individuals do not invest sufficient time in discovering their unique, innate abilities. Talent requires introspection, curiosity, and deliberate exploration. When neglected, it remains undiscovered—like a birthday gift that is never opened.

b. The Underutilised Talent

Even when people identify their talent, they often do not know how to channel it meaningfully. As a result, it gets relegated to a hobby—something for occasional entertainment or relief, rather than a serious avenue of growth or expression.

c. The Unrefined Potential

Talent without disciplined practice remains raw. Many fail to invest the time and effort needed to hone their abilities. Like an uncut diamond, such talent lacks polish and therefore, value. Over time, it risks fading into obscurity—becoming wasted potential.

For talent to truly fructify and translate into success, five essential elements are required:

1. A Natural Endowment

The presence of an inherent ability or gift.

2. A ‘Scout’

Someone who can identify and recognise

this talent early.

3. A Coach

A guide who structures disciplined and

sustained practice to refine the raw ability.

4. A Community and Mentor

Engaging with others in the same

domain helps build perspective and

opportunity. A mentor, in particular,

provides direction—helping navigate the

complex journey of turning passion into a

meaningful pursuit or even a career.

5. Humility and Strategy

Keeping one’s head down, staying

grounded, and progressing with

thoughtful strategy ensures steady

growth and long-term success.

Frustration often arises in those who sense a hidden talent within themselves but are unable to nurture or channel it effectively. The tragedy is not the absence of talent—but the inability to recognise, develop, and apply it.

Imagine if Luciano Pavarotti, the legendary tenor, had never discovered or nurtured his voice. The world would have lost a masterpiece—and he, a life of true expression who would have sadly been a clerk making financial entries otherwise in a bank !!!!!

Talent is a gift—but its fulfilment is a responsibility.
