Be A Possibilist

My late father often reminded me not to give up too quickly or settle for the first acceptable option. He would say, “If a road appears blocked, never conclude it is closed until you have seriously explored whether it can still lead you to your destination.”
A possibilist believes in possibilities, even when circumstances seem challenging. They acknowledge reality but focus on what can still be done and how obstacles can become pathways of opportunity through resilient thinking.
Hans Rosling famously stated, “I’m not an optimist. I’m a very serious possibilist.” Possibilists see solutions where others see dead ends, balancing realism with hope. They believe progress is achievable through consistent effort, creativity, courage, and tenacity.
For leaders, being a possibilist is essential. Closed-minded leaders risk becoming passive in a rapidly changing world. Effective possibilist leaders exhibit:
- A willingness to experiment
- A grassroots understanding of reality
- Discomfort with stagnation
- A growth mindset
- A relentless search for better ways to succeed
They succeed by evaluating possibilities that others dismiss. So, be a possibilist. The roads that seem closed to the ordinary eye can lead extraordinary people to success, even in adverse times.
