You are ultimately in charge of your destination.Well-wishers can share their experiences, guide your preparation, offer feedback, point out your blind spots and suggest paths they believe may work for you. Their wisdom is valuable.
But the final responsibility for reaching your destination rests with you. This is the essence of personal agency. Julian Rotter's concept of locus of control reminds us that while we cannot control every circumstance, we can control how we prepare, respond, learn, adapt and act.
Advice is a resource—not a transfer of responsibility. Others can show you the map, describe the terrain and warn you about the potholes. But you still have to walk the road.
And there will always be a crowd heading towards the same destination. Some will be better prepared, some better resourced, and some simply faster.
Psychologist Albert Bandura's concept of self-efficacy reminds us that success also depends on our belief in our ability to act effectively and persist when things get difficult.
The crowd is not necessarily your enemy. It is your reality.
Learn from it. Listen to it. But don't blindly follow it.
At some point, you must find your own path.
And if you don't reach your destination, don't blame those who advised you. Their advice may have been imperfect—but the decision to follow it was yours.
The ultimate differentiator is the ability to think independently, learn continuously, adapt intelligently and carve your own path through the crowd.
The destination may be shared. The journey—and the responsibility—are yours.
