Envy often distorts our perception, leading us to script our own narratives of suffering. In a hyper-competitive world, deep-seated envy and the urge to compare ourselves to others can create a false belief that those who succeed do so by chance rather than through their own hard work.

This envy can blind us to our own blessings and abundance. A few summers ago, a fascinating research study was conducted. Participants were asked to identify five people they believed were better off than them and another five who they thought were not. Each participant then wrote down five blessings and five setbacks on separate pieces of paper, placing them into jars labeled 'Blessings' and 'Set-backs.'

Later, participants randomly selected a combination of five blessings and five setbacks from the jars. They were then asked whether they would prefer to keep their original set of blessings and setbacks or adopt the new ones. Remarkably, everyone chose to retain their existing combinations.

This response highlights a profound realization: self-awareness can replace envy. Participants recognized the abundance of their own blessings, valuing them more than they had before. This study serves as a reminder of the importance of appreciating what we have rather than focusing on what we perceive others possess.

The next time you feel envious of any one, don't sulk. Audit your life and count your blessings !
